Why sending cards and letters still matters
In a world of instant messages and fleeting notifications, a handwritten note or a thoughtful card with a few heartfelt words really stands out. It’s a small act, but a simple way to brighten someone’s day and its impact can be deep and lasting.
Here’s why it matters more than we might realise:
1. It’s a reminder that someone is thinking of you
Receiving a card with a kind message - especially when it’s unexpected—can turn an ordinary day into something special. It tells the recipient: ‘you’re in my thoughts’, and that alone can be a powerful gift.
2. It lasts longer than a quick message
A text can be read and forgotten in seconds, but a card is something people tend to keep. Pinned to a fridge, tucked into a drawer, or placed in a book, kind words have a way of staying with us. I have some of my favourites pinned to the cork board above my computer.
3. It creates a moment of pause in a busy world
Both writing and receiving a note encourage a small but meaningful pause. Sitting down to write a message forces us to slow down and be intentional. For the recipient, reading a note is a quiet moment of connection in an otherwise fast-moving day.
4. It can turn someone's day around
We never know what someone might be going through. A few kind words—whether it’s appreciation, encouragement, or just a simple hello - can be the thing that lifts someone out of a difficult moment.
5. It strengthens relationships in a unique way
Taking the time to send a card shows effort and care. In friendships, family relationships, and even professional connections, a well-timed message of kindness can deepen bonds and bring people closer. Every December, my mum’s second cousin (no idea what relationship that is to me) sends a card and a newsy letter, and it’s one of the highlights of my Christmas.
6. It inspires kindness to ripple outward
Kindness is contagious. When someone receives a thoughtful card, they’re more likely to pass that warmth on—to a friend, a colleague, or even a stranger. One small act can start a quiet chain of goodwill. And the world is sorely in need of more goodwill.
In a world where everything moves so quickly, a card or letter with a lovely message is more than just words on paper—it’s a small but powerful way to bring warmth and connection into someone’s life and leave a lasting impact. So:
Send a card just because.
Write an encouraging letter to someone you know is having a tough time.
Mail a card to someone who might appreciate a surprise.
